WBW Show in Review

- I usually don't comment on the "Show in Reviews," but I have to today.  When I booked Exree Hipp on the show, my thoughts were to have a former Maryland Terp on the show that can comment on what it is like to play Duke and experience "Senior Night."  Both relevant with the game tonight.  I did not in my wildest dreams expect to have a former player of Gary Williams basically throw him under the bus and not seem remorseful about it.  Exree blamed Coach Williams for the reason he gained weight before his senior season and why he had a below average finish to his Maryland career.  Exree thinks Gary struggles as a recruiter and believes the flex offense that the Terps run is a "high school offense."  Exree also believes that the National Championship was "lucky," and that Coach Driesell should be the head coach.

- Jay McGwire, author of "Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret," joined the show and weighed in on his brother's use of steroids.  Jay agreed that Mark McGwire helped create the "steroid era" and Jay admitted that he introduced steroids to his brother in 1994.  Jay said they used because it helped them recover quicker, but it also made Mark hit the high amounts of homeruns that he did.

- Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Dean Pees came on the program and discussed why he chose to come to Baltimore as a linebackers coach instead of pursuing another defensive coordinator position.  Coach Pees also weighed in on Terrell Suggs and the great opportunity he has to coach Ray Lewis.

- Alex Marvez from FOXSports.com joined the show to talk some NFL.  Alex gave his thoughts on Taylor Mays' exceptional workouts at the combine and the perception of Maryland Terps' players entering the draft.

In response to the exree Hipp interview, in my opinion he sounded like a disgruntled ex- player. Here is my point and maybe you can answer this question for me. How does a GOOD coach take less than tier one talent, run a high school flex offense, accumulate over 600 wins at Ohio State, Boston College and the University of Maryland, and win a national championship? That is one hell of a GOOD coach in my opinion. What do you think?

Why not post these as mp3's? Hipp is just making excuses for a horrible senior year. The offense works fine when you have talent.

Rob, make sure you tell folks to download the files and rename the filename to mp3 and they should be fine. As far as Exree's comments, he just need to get over it. It's been better than ten years it is what it is.

I don't know many ex-Gary players that actually like Gary after playing for him. Haven't you all noticed?!?! Most leave and stay away for a reason.

LB-What gave you that idea. There are plenty of former players that come back and still like Gary. Exree seems to be an exception.

My name is Kevin McLinton. I played for Gary for 4 years and was his captain my senior year. I heard this interview with my former teammate Exree Hipp. It is unfortunate it has gotten to this point. If would like another opinion on the NCAA tournament about the Terps. Let me know. Kevin McLinton 703-212-2782

As a former player who had success under Gary Williams...Exree Hipp's comments are correct. I understand the disappointment with his comments because you are a fan and you are on the outside looking in. @ LB Those players that you see that come back, don't actually come back for Gary, they are back to support UMD basketball because we love the school and have not seen each other in years. As far as winning goes, the leader of our country picked Mich. St because he said, " Maryland has better players, but Michigan State has a great coach." Maybe I am the only one that saw that, chuckled and knew exactly what he meant. Disgruntle or not Exree Hipp stated what a lot of people that have played for Gary feel. For anyone that thinks Hipp is an ass, go to one of Gary Williams practices. If you look on the bench, there are 2 or 3 guys at the beginning of the bench and the rest of the team is separated by assistant coaches. The guys on the other side are treated like $*It in practice. Its' sad but true.

I knew Exree Hipp when he was at Maryland. I remember seeing him come in as a freshman and thinking "that boy's got hops" and I was excited to see what he could do. I saw what he could do and it wasn't much. Ex spent his days figuring out how to get out of class and to get other students to help him do his work while he drove in to DC to hang with his boys. He was more worried about how many pagers he had and what kind of car he drove than he was about putting in the work it took to be a great ball player. He thought natural talent would be enough to get him through and resented the coaches for expecting him to put in time actually earning a better role on the team. Blaming coach for weight gain? Give me a break. It's time Ex grew up and took some responsibility for the choices HE made in his life that created the results he got. If he was so miserable, why didn't he leave? I'm definitely not saying Coach is the most well-liked guy on the planet and that he doesn't have his shortcomings. I'm just saying that you have to take this particular source with a grain of salt.
