After watching Maryland get manhandled by Duke on Saturday afternoon, I
have decided that I will take the same approach with the Terps as I did
with the Ravens. Until Maryland is able to defeat a quality team, I am
going to pick against them when they face a better opponent. The Terps
have two wins against a team with an RPI under 50 and both of those
wins were against Florida State. However, outside of the loss to
William & Mary (RPI at 51), Maryland does not have any bad losses
either. This is a credit to Gary Williams and the three seniors, but
when they match-up against better teams, their lack of athleticism,
size, and quickness are on display.
The Blue Devils played tight defense forcing Maryland to create off the
dribble and they were unable to do that. Landon Milbourne was
non-existent the entire game and other than a 3-4 minute spurt in the
second half, Greivis Vasquez was as well, but by that time, Duke had
the game in hand. The Terps do not have enough scorers or depth to
compensate when Milbourne and Vasquez struggle

and Duke exploited that.
Maryland is still in position to win the regular season ACC title, but
they will have to find a way to defeat the teams that are better than
they are.
Other thoughts: I always enjoy
watching the NBA Slam Dunk contest, but I was not entertained this
year. There were too many missed dunks and not enough creativity. It
also does not help that the participants are not known players.
The Olympics have yet to capture my attention, and I am sure I am not
alone. The unfortunate death of Nodar Kumaritashvili during luge
practice already put a black cloud over the Olympics and the bad
weather has delayed many of the events. As I tuned in on Saturday and
Sunday afternoon, I was forced to watch ski jumping, not exactly
thrilling television.
