Thursday on The Rob Long Show

The Ravens will hold a team administrative day today before finally starting training camp with the entire team on Friday.  The past two days have been fun because football is back, but it will be good to talk about real action instead of a rookie DT who failed a conditioning test on his first try.  Training camp is important of course, but this is also the time of the year where coaches and reporters will point out specific players who are having a good camp, and many of them will not make an impact during the season.  We will hear a lot about receivers Justin Harper and Demetrius Williams, but I will not be getting my hopes up.  I was fooled in years past by these two, but that will not happen again.  I think when the regular season starts, Williams will be on another football team and Harper will be on the practice squad.  Daily O's update...they lost again and Rick Kranitz is not happy with the progress of the young pitchers.

Here is the rundown of today's guests:

Ed Lee:  The Baltimore Sun writer breaks down the first two days of camp.

David Steele:  The AOL Fanhouse columnist talks all things sports.

Peter Schrager:  The FOXSports.com writer previews the NFL season.

I've been sour on the media since they drove Eddie Murray out of town. They didn't like Eddie because he didn't grant interviews...big deal ...he did his talking on the field...so did Steve Carlton and I always admired him for not speaking to the press...the media is too puffed up with itself...much of sports media has now become sports gossip.it's amazing to me that when sports media grew in the 80's and 90's with ESPN and FOX sports etc. that no one seriously examined a real story...the abuse of performance enhancing drugs..even with some of the evidence that was right before their eyes...could McGuire, Sosa, Palmero etc. realy compare with Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Killebrew, and Frank Robinson....seriously? The story was there wasn't it worth investigating, even a little? What I'm concerned with is how these guys like Ed Reed play...what they do on the field...and if they are doing something that's illegal, criminal etc. If they want to spout off so be it as long as it doesn't hurt the team and its ability to win games. Ed has not only put his butt on the line but literally his neck and even if he and others are well paid, football injuries sometimes last a lifetime. It would be nice if the media engaged in self criticism once in a while ....admit they play favorites, don't reveal the entire story,or fail to investigate real stories which need reporting. But Ed Reed spouting off....that's nothing, really. He's provided me and other fans with some of the most exciting moments in Ravens history and he's at times single handedly deflated opponents with his interceptions(as long as he doesn't try to lateral....a legitimate complaint). I like members of the media too but I'm more concerned with the Xs and Os and how the games are played and what will effect the team...like Sergio Kindle's injury. Just thought I'd let you know. Keep up the good work. Lew, Baltimore P.S. I know it's hard to believe but I sometimes disagee with you too.
