I guess I could post my "Monday on The Rob Long Show" blog today and insert the name Chris Tillman instead of Brian Matusz and it would still make sense. Tillman reverted back to his pre-Texas start last night as he could not pitch past the third inning. Tillman was unable to command his fastball which makes his other pitches ineffective and against the a team like the Tampa Bay Rays, the results aren't going to be good. Tillman gave up 8 earned runs and walked four in 2 2/3 innings and his season ERA is now 7.92. I was hoping he was able to build off of the great start he had against the Rangers, but instead, he looked like the pitcher that has struggled in most of his big league starts. Tillman needs to stay in the majors, but he also needs to start pitching better.
The reality is that there are no veterans to take the pressure off of them. This is a bad baseball team and they will sink or swim by the results of the young pitching. The Rays had a rookie pitcher starting as well in Wade Davis, but he is able to go through his struggles because he has more established pitchers ahead of him. That is not the case for the Orioles and hasn't been all season long.
