Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
Anquan Boldin was formally introduced as a Baltimore Raven yesterday and he can not wait to get started in becoming the Ravens "go-to" wide receiver. Boldin mentioned many times how excited he is and how this is a great opportunity for him to play in Baltimore. Boldin even used the word "championship" during the press conference. As I mentioned yesterday, I think the Ravens are better offensively than last season, but they still need one more wide receiver (Derrick Mason?) to truly take the next step in becoming a Super Bowl caliber offense. The maturity of Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, and the offensive line along with the addition of Boldin makes them an upper echelon offense, but to be compared with the best, one more acquisition has to be made.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
B.J. Surhoff: The former Oriole joins the show to talk baseball and the 10th Anniversary of Pathfinders for Autism.
Greg Amsinger: The MLB Network anchor talks Spring Training.
Chris Mannix: The SI.com writer gives his thoughts on the NBA.

- Mike Duffy from BaltimoreRavens.com joined the show to weigh in on the Boldin trade. Mike was surprised with how quickly the trade happened, but thinks Boldin will fit in quickly. Mike also commented on the possibilities of Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton coming back in 2010.
- Matt Zenitz from PressBox came on the program and talked about the impact the Boldin acquisition has on the Ravens draft plans. Matt doesn't think this changes their plan and that drafting a wide receiver in the first round is still a strong possibility.
- Michael Lombardi from the NFL Network and NationalFootballPost.com joined the show and gave his take on the Ravens trading for Boldin. Michael also weighed in on the possibility of Derrick Mason coming back and the importance of a pass rush in the NFL.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
This was a very boring sports weekend if you are a Ravens/Terps fan...haha! Ozzie Newsome and company answered the prayers of all Ravens fans Friday afternoon when they traded for Anquan Boldin, providing the wide receiver help Joe Flacco desperately needs. Boldin immediately becomes the number one receiver this team has lacked since they moved to Baltimore. If the Ravens are able to re-sign Derrick Mason, the receiving corps will finally be worth talking about. Boldin provides the YAC (yards after the catch) receiver this team has never had while Mason will continue to be the possession guy. Donte' Stallworth will be the deep threat that can stretch the field and Mark Clayton/draft pick/free agent signing will provide depth. Factor in Flacco's continuing development and Ray Rice becoming one of the better playmakers in the NFL with his 2009 performance, this offense might finally be able to take the next step that will make the Ravens serious contenders.
I can't finish without sending congratulations to the Maryland Terps. The Terps had a scare on Saturday afternoon against Virginia, but Greivis Vasquez put the team on his shoulders (again) and led Maryland to the victory which makes them tied for the regular season title in the ACC with Duke. The Terps will play on Friday night at 7pm against the winnner of Georgia Tech/North Carolina.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Mike Duffy: The BaltimoreRavens.com writer gives his thoughts on the addition of Anquan Boldin.
Matt Zenitz: The draft expert for PressBox weighs in on the Boldin trade and how this affects the Ravens in the draft.
Michael Lombardi: The NFL Network analyst talks NFL offseason.

Chicken Box Friday!

Happy Chicken Box Friday! A topic of discussion lately on the show has involved a pair of outfielders for the Orioles: Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold. There are a large amounts of people who remember what Pie did in August and September and forget what he did the first 4 months of the season. Pie had a hard time earning at-bats in June and July because rookie Nolan Reimold cemented himself in left field. I think Andy MacPhail did the right thing this offseason when Pie was brought up in trade talks. MacPhail said that he has three outfielders (Adam Jones, Pie, Reimold) who have yet to play 162 games in a season. All good teams have depth, and the Orioles are finally building their team that way. If Pie plays well, (hit a homerun and a triple in his spring training debut) Dave Trembley will find a way to put his name in the lineup. Reimold can DH against left-handed pitchers, and Trembley has the luxury to rest Jones and Nick Markakis without the fear of a big dropoff. The hope is that the Orioles are playing well in August-September, and with 4 healthy outfielders, the risk of tiring at the end of the season will be less. This is a good problem to have, and fans should not be taking sides between Pie and Reimold.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Charles Davis: The NFL Network analyst breaks down free agency
Scott Miller: The CBSSports.com MLB writer talks baseball and previews the Orioles.
Charley Toomey: The Loyola lacrosse head coach talks about his team.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show
An electric atmosphere last night in College Park as the Terps pulled into a first-place tie with Duke in the ACC with a 79-72 victory over the Blue Devils on "Senior Night." Playing in his last game at Maryland, Greivis Vasquez scored 20 points, but his acrobatic shot with under a minute left will provide a memory that all Maryland fans will remember for a long time. Jordan Williams, who struggled the last time against Duke, scored 15 points and contributed 11 rebounds, and made huge free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Adrian Bowie came off the bench and contributed 9 points while going 4-4 from the field. With one game remaining in the ACC regular season, the Terps have positioned themselves for a deep run in the ACC tournament.
Other notables from yesterday: The Orioles opened up their spring season with a 12-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Third base prospect Josh Bell hit two homeruns, one from each side of the plate, and Nick Markakis also contributed a homerun along with a double. The Ravens placed first-round tenders on Jared Gaither, Le'Ron McClain and Fabian Washington. They are expected to place the same tender on Mark Clayton.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Chuck Driesell: The assistant coach for the Terps recaps last night's big win.
David Steele: The AOL Fanhouse writer gives his thoughts on Maryland's victory.
Richard Collier: The Ed Block Courage Award recipient for the Jacksonville Jaguars shares his incredible story.

WBW Show in Review
- I usually don't comment on the "Show in Reviews," but I have to today. When I booked Exree Hipp on the show, my thoughts were to have a former Maryland Terp on the show that can comment on what it is like to play Duke and experience "Senior Night." Both relevant with the game tonight. I did not in my wildest dreams expect to have a former player of Gary Williams basically throw him under the bus and not seem remorseful about it. Exree blamed Coach Williams for the reason he gained weight before his senior season and why he had a below average finish to his Maryland career. Exree thinks Gary struggles as a recruiter and believes the flex offense that the Terps run is a "high school offense." Exree also believes that the National Championship was "lucky," and that Coach Driesell should be the head coach.
- Jay McGwire, author of "Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-Kept Secret," joined the show and weighed in on his brother's use of steroids. Jay agreed that Mark McGwire helped create the "steroid era" and Jay admitted that he introduced steroids to his brother in 1994. Jay said they used because it helped them recover quicker, but it also made Mark hit the high amounts of homeruns that he did.
- Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Dean Pees came on the program and discussed why he chose to come to Baltimore as a linebackers coach instead of pursuing another defensive coordinator position. Coach Pees also weighed in on Terrell Suggs and the great opportunity he has to coach Ray Lewis.
- Alex Marvez from FOXSports.com joined the show to talk some NFL. Alex gave his thoughts on Taylor Mays' exceptional workouts at the combine and the perception of Maryland Terps' players entering the draft.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Huge show planned today, but first, the day has finally arrived. Maryland fans have had this date circled all season long, especially since the day the Terps were defeated by Duke in Cameron. Greivis Vasquez will lead his team on "Senior Night" to try and tie the Blue Devils for first-place in the ACC. Maryland has dropped 6-straight games against Duke, but they have protected their home floor during conference play. I don't think I am out of line to say this is the biggest game the Terps have played since the ACC Championship game a few seasons ago. I am curious to see how Vasquez keeps his emotions in check to start the game in what will be an emotional filled pregame ceremony. The senior thrives off moments like this, and I expect for him to play well the entire game.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday: Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's trivia question to find out who our guest will be.
Jay McGwire: The brother of slugger and admitted steroid user Mark McGwire joins the show to talk about his new book.
Dean Pees: The linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens discusses why he chose to come to Baltimore.

- Chad Reuter from NFLDraftScout.com joined the show to weigh in on the NFL Combine. Chad commented on Mardy Gilyard's 40-yd time and if it will hurt his draft stock. Chad says the interview process is the most important part of the combine and there are many things to be gained by the combine.
- Jimmy Patsos came in-studio to talk a variety of subjects. While the Loyola head basketball coach was in-studio, college basketball analyst Seth Davis joined the show. The SI.com writer and CBS analyst gave his thoughts on Coach K adjusting with the times to allow him to continue being a great coach. Seth talked about the ACC Coach of the Year and ACC Player of the Year and thinks Gary Williams and Greivis Vasquez can both win the award. Seth also talked about his book being released in paperback: When March Went Mad: The Game that Transformed Basketball"
- Morgan State's head basketball coach Todd Bozeman joined the show to talk about the Bears. Coach Bozeman talked about the difficulties of coaching freshmen, but how it is gratifying at the same time. Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
A very interesting article in the Baltimore Sun this morning regarding the restricted free agents for the Baltimore Ravens. It appears the Ravens are ready to part ways with wide receiver Demetrius Williams. Williams has yet to reach his potential and team officials were not happy with his one-arm effort in the playoffs against the Colts. Baltimore is prepared to offer Jared Gaither a one-year, $3 million tender, which would force teams to give up a first-round and third-round draft pick if they sign Gaither. The Ravens have a total of 17 restricted free agents. Here are some of the notable restricted free agents: Sam Koch, Mark Clayton, Marshal Yanda, Le'Ron McClain, and Dawan Landry.

Seth Davis: The SI.com and CBS analyst breaks down the world of college basketball
Jimmy Patsos: The Loyola men's basketball head coach talks about his season.

Walt says he is very surprised with the way the Terps have played in conference play, and Wednesday's game against Duke is must-win in terms of confidence and feeling that they can beat Duke going forward. Walt also discussed Sean Mosley rebounding from a bad stretch of games and his thoughts on Greivis Vasquez.
- Ross Tucker from GoBigRecruiting.com and SI.com joined the show to talk NFL Combine. Ross thinks the combine gets too much hype and should not be a huge factor is a player's draft stock. Ross talked about the quarterbacks who decided not to throw and the importance of the interview process.

Monday on The Rob Long Show

Another great weekend in sports. I have admitted that I am not a huge hockey fan, but the Olympics have made me rethink that. I was entertained every time I watched team USA play and yesterday's loss to Canada was one of the best games I have watched in any sport. I do not know if I will take the momentum from the Olympics and watch the NHL, but for the last three weeks, I came to appreciate the game of hockey. However, the game that grabbed my attention over the weekend was Maryland's victory at Virginia Tech. Greivis Vasquez again proved that he should be considered seriously for the ACC Player of the Year. Vasquez scored 41 points in the double-overtime win and has now moved into third-place on the all-time scoring list at Maryland. Duke is coming to College Park Wednesday night on Senior Night and with first place on the line in what could turn out to be an instant classic. I think a victory and a well played game by Vasquez will go a long way in helping him become the player of the year. Vasquez has struggled throughout his career against the Blue Devils, and to win that award, Vasquez must step up on the big stage.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Walt Williams: The analyst for the Terps Radio Network talks Terps.
Ross Tucker: The NFL writer for SI.com talks NFL Combine.
Mike Duffy: The BaltimoreRavens.com writer breaks down the combine and what the Ravens have learned over the first couple of days.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! All is quiet in Sarasota which is a great thing. It seems like the minor injuries to Brad Bergesen and Chris Tillman are behind them and the back injury to Brian Roberts has not been an issue. Miguel Tejada seems to be adjusting well to third base, even though the real test is when he has to field a ground ball in live action. As I mentioned before, there is something to be said for coming to camp and just preparing for the season instead of worrying about making the team. The roster and the roles of each player is pretty much set which is a huge difference from years past. Dave Trembley and company can put their entire focus on Opening Day and making this team better.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Brenda Frese: The head women's basketball coach for the Terps talk about Maryland' season.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show
After Cliff Tucker's buzzer beating game winning shot Saturday to lift Maryland over Georgia Tech, I did not think there would be a more entertaining Terps game this season. Then I watched last night's contest between Maryland and Clemson. The Terps were able to come back from a 15-point deficit to defeat the Tigers 88-79 and stay undefeated at home during conference play. Sean Mosley woke up from his recent scoring drought to lead the Terps with 20 points and Jordan Williams added 18 points. However, Maryland officially started their comeback when Greivis Vasquez was able to score. Vasquez struggled in the first half scoring, but he was able to chip in with 8 assists. Vasquez finished with 13 assists and with his 15 points, he has moved into 4th place on the scoring list at Maryland. The Terps have a huge game Saturday at Virginia Tech, who lost to Boston College Wednesday night, before they return home for "Senior Night" against Duke.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
David Steele: The AOL Fanhouse writer gives his thoughts on the Terps and other sports headlines.
Dan Bonner: The Raycom Sports analyst covered the Maryland game last night.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
The first full-team workout will be held this afternoon in Sarasota for the Orioles as preparation for the 2010 season can finally begin. There have already been a couple of story lines that have developed: Brad Bergesen is on the mend after injuring his shoulder filming an Orioles commerical. The Orioles have been pleased with the progress of Bergesen and they are hoping he will be able to pitch off a mound in the next few days if his flat ground session goes well today. Chris Tillman has been taking it easy the last couple of days due to back stiffness. Tillman missed his bullpen session yesterday, but the club is not concerned of him falling behind because he threw a series of bullpen sessions before reporting to Sarasota.
The one injury to keep a close eye on is Brian Roberts' herniated disk in his back. Again, the Orioles are not concerned and Roberts already has said the back has improved since he started therapy and he will not need surgery at the end of the season, but I can't help to think the rigors of a 162-game schedule won't have an effect later in the season. I know some fans were disappointed to hear that Miguel Tejada did not report to camp early, but the Orioles don't pressure players to do that. It is a long spring, and Tejada will have plenty of time to adjust to third base. On the positive side, Nick Markakis and Felix Pie have had great rounds in the batting cage and Brandon Erbe had an "impressive" bullpen session yesterday according to Trembley.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Jeff Nelson: The former big league pitcher and current analyst for MLB.com previews the MLB season.
Sean Farnham: The FOX Sports Radio analyst talks college basketball.
Scott Wright: The DraftCountdown.com editor talks NFL Draft.
Brian Mahoney: The AP writer weighs in on the NBA.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
I have admitted many times that I am not a huge hockey fan, but last night's game between USA and Canada was as an exciting game as a person will watch. The U.S. started quickly by scoring 41 seconds into the contest and even though Canada outshot the United States 45-23 and lost 5-3, the game never seemed close. The Americans are the number one seed as they advance to the quarterfinals for their game on Tuesday.
Thank you Cliff Tucker! The junior hit the game winning shot Saturday against Georgia Tech in what became a crazy 10 seconds at College Park. Tucker has had an up-and-down three years at Maryland as he has great games, but often times disappearing and wondering what his role is. The Terps have a tough three game stretch coming up with games against Clemson, Virginia Tech and Duke so Saturday's win was huge as they try to keep pace in the ACC.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Oliver Purnell: The Clemson head basketball coach talks about the Tigers' season.
Steve Yanda: The Washington Post writer gives his thoughts on the Terps.
Kevin Goldstein: The Baseball Prospectus writer previews the 2010 MLB season.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! Tiger Woods will finally speak to the media this morning and I am sure he will apologize to his wife, his family, his friends, and his fans for the mistakes that he has made. He will say that he is a changed man and that he is focused on putting his life back together and finding a way to save his marriage. All that is fine, but the only thing I want to hear from Tiger is when he will return to golf. I have had no interest in golf since he has left and my interest in golf will still be non-existant until he returns. If Tiger announces his return to golf today, then his press conference would be a success.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show

The Terps kept within striking distance for first place in the ACC last night as they used a second half surge to defeat NC State 67-58. Trailing by 10 at halftime, Greivis Vasquez and Jordan Williams picked their games up to help Maryland outscore the Wolf Pack by 19 points in the last 20 minutes. Vasquez finished with 26 pts with 6 assists, while not committing one turnover in the second half. Williams finished with a career high 19 points. Maryland started the game slowly, which was to be expected as they were playing their third game in five days and playing on the road. However, Vasquez put the Terps on his back as he has done for most of the season to improve Maryland to an 8-3 conference record. Eric Hayes, Landon Milbourne, and Sean Mosely were quiet the entire contest which could hurt the Terps down the stretch. Luckily, Williams and Adrian Bowie provided to be other scoring options, but if Vasquez has an off-game, Maryland will be in trouble, unless the other three starters step up.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Mike Duffy: The BaltimoreRavens.com writer gives his thoughts on the Donte' Stallworth signing.
David Steele: The AOL Fanhouse writer talks about the NBA trading deadline, the Terps, and the Ravens.
Dan Bonner: The analyst from Raycom Sports recaps the MD-NC State game.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to listen to our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be. The day has finally arrived. Pitchers and catchers will report to spring training today and hold their first workout tomorrow. For all the questions surrounding the Orioles, the players who will make the 25-man roster does not appear to be one of them. There are only a couple of roster spots open (backup catcher, utility infielder, 3 bullpen arms, and possibly one starter) as spring training starts. The biggest debate this spring will be deciding where each hitter will bat in the lineup instead of who will be in the starting lineup. Competition is always a good thing, but I think as a young player, knowing your roster spot is secure helps more. Instead of trying to compete to make the team, the focus can be getting ready to play a 162-game schedule and winning ballgames.
Here is the rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday: Listen to our Pizza John's Trivia Question.
David Ginsburg: The AP writer gives his thoughts on the Terps and the Orioles.
Jeff Nelson: The former big league pitcher and analyst for MLB.com and XM Radio previews the MLB season.

The Terps showed up again at home last night as they improved to 5-0 at the Comcast Center during ACC play with a convincing 85-66 victory over Virginia. Senior Greivis Vasquez knows his career as a Terp is winding down and played like that last night as he scored 30 points. Coming off a game where he struggled against Duke, Vasquez put Maryland on his back and contributed 25 points in the first half. The Terps continue to beat the teams that they should and they will conclude their three games in five days on Wednesday night against NC State. With the victory, Maryland's hope of winning the ACC is still reachable.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Walt Williams: The analyst for Terps Radio Network recaps last night's game.
Jason La Canfora: The NFL Network analyst talks the latest in football.
Lenn Robbins: The college basketball writer for the NY Post weighs in on the landscape of college basketball.

Duke Too Much For Maryland
After watching Maryland get manhandled by Duke on Saturday afternoon, I
have decided that I will take the same approach with the Terps as I did
with the Ravens. Until Maryland is able to defeat a quality team, I am
going to pick against them when they face a better opponent. The Terps
have two wins against a team with an RPI under 50 and both of those
wins were against Florida State. However, outside of the loss to
William & Mary (RPI at 51), Maryland does not have any bad losses
either. This is a credit to Gary Williams and the three seniors, but
when they match-up against better teams, their lack of athleticism,
size, and quickness are on display.
The Blue Devils played tight defense forcing Maryland to create off the
dribble and they were unable to do that. Landon Milbourne was
non-existent the entire game and other than a 3-4 minute spurt in the
second half, Greivis Vasquez was as well, but by that time, Duke had
the game in hand. The Terps do not have enough scorers or depth to
compensate when Milbourne and Vasquez struggle and Duke exploited that.
Maryland is still in position to win the regular season ACC title, but
they will have to find a way to defeat the teams that are better than
they are.
Other thoughts: I always enjoy
watching the NBA Slam Dunk contest, but I was not entertained this
year. There were too many missed dunks and not enough creativity. It
also does not help that the participants are not known players.
The Olympics have yet to capture my attention, and I am sure I am not
alone. The unfortunate death of Nodar Kumaritashvili during luge
practice already put a black cloud over the Olympics and the bad
weather has delayed many of the events. As I tuned in on Saturday and
Sunday afternoon, I was forced to watch ski jumping, not exactly
thrilling television.

Chicken Box Friday!

Happy Chicken Box Friday! Reading this morning about Brad Bergesen's injury is not the greatest news as we are only a few days away from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training. Bergesen injured his throwing shoulder while taping a commercial for the Orioles. This is the second time in the last six months that Bergesen has had a run-in with an injury due to bad luck. Bergesen missed the last two months of the 2009 season after taking a line drive off his shin. Andy MacPhail and Bergesen both feel the injury is not a concern and Bergesen will only miss the first 10 days of spring training, but anytime there is an injury to a pitcher's throwing shoulder, it is cause for concern. Bergesen is slated to be the third pitcher in the rotation this season, and when a young pitcher misses time during spring training as they are preparing for the long season, it is never good for their growth. I am happy to read the optimism in MacPhail and Bergesen, but the second fluke injury to Bergesen in a 6-month span, could affect the first couple of months for Bergesen as he tries to get in "pitching shape."

Ross Tucker: The SI.com writer talks the latest NFL headlines.
Chad Reuter: The NFL draft expert from CBSSports.com weighs in on the Ravens' needs.
Brandon Erbe: The Orioles minor league pitcher talks about his offseason.

I know it is hard to believe with all the snow on the ground and more coming, but pitchers and catchers report for the Orioles a week from Wednesday. I can not wait until spring training and see the maturation of the young players, especially the pitchers. I will give a roster breakdown as spring training kicks off, but knowing baseball season is close has allowed me to deal with the snow. However, since there is still time until baseball season starts and with the NFL season officially over, my attention turns to college basketball. The Terps played as well of a game as possible on Sunday against the Tar Heels. They were red hot from the field, especially from 3-point range as they shot over 50% from both. I am enjoying watch these guys play, led by the three seniors, but I still want to see them win against a quality team. With Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Clemson on the horizon, the Terps will have plenty of opportunities to prove that they belong in the ACC elite.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Jason La Canfora: The NFL Network analyst recaps the Super Bowl and talks offseason.
Todd Bozeman: The Morgan State Bears head basketball coach talks about the Bears' season.
Jim Duquette: The XM Radio MLB analyst and former Orioles' GM weighs in on the latest MLB news.

Chicken Box Friday!

Happy Chicken Box Friday! I hope everyone is safe during the snowstorm and can make it to their Super Bowl parties! The Terps were able to get back in the win column last night with their 71-67 victory over Florida State. Maryland is now 15-6 overall with a 5-2 record in the ACC. Greivis Vasquez filled up the box score again, but I am starting to be convinced that this team goes as Landon Milbourne goes. Vasquez will always get his stats, but in order for the Terps to have a shot to win, Milbourne needs to play well. Milbourne scored 18 points last night in the win and added 3 steals, 3 blocks, and 6 rebounds. In the loss to Clemson, Milbourne was only able to contribute 3 points, but he averaged 16.5 points in the previous four victories. Jordan Williams continues to progress as a freshman, but Sean Mosley and Eric Hayes have been too inconsistent on the offensive end. Milbourne has been the steady influence all season long, and if the Terps want to win the ACC, the senior has to continue to play well.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Dan Beyer: The FOX Sports Radio reporter concludes his week-long Super Bowl coverage.
Walt Williams: The former Terp and current sideline reporter for the Terps Radio Network recaps Maryland's victory last night.

The Ravens held their "State of the Ravens" press conference yesterday and the majority of the questions were related to the CBA and the affect it will have on the Ravens. The Ravens claim everything will be fine whatever happens and they are confident that they will still be able to field a competitive team. However, the team did say they need a playmaker at the wide receiving position and they are open to trading for that player. They think added another playmaker is paramount in Joe Flacco's development. Ozzie Newsome again said he will not put the Ravens in a bad position by drafting for need instead of the best player available. Newsome said this has always been the philosophy and his track record backs that up. I found it interesting that Steve Bisciotti said that Terrell Suggs came to camp out of shape and John Harbaugh followed with saying Suggs needs to be in town during the offseason. Bisciotti also said he was unhappy with all the penalties, and they will part ways with players who refuse to correct their technique to stop committing penalties.

Dan Beyer: The FOX Sports Radio reporter will bring the latest news from the Super Bowl.

Way Back Wednesday!

Happy Way Back Wednesday! We had a great debate yesterday on the show. I said that if all things were equal, the O's playing well along with the Ravens, the Baltimore-metro area would be a baseball town. I received some criticism, which I expected. My point was that not everyone in Maryland is a Ravens fan. To the south there are Redskins' fans and to the north there are Eagles' fans with Steelers' fans spread throughout. However, the one thing most have in common is everyone pulls for the Orioles. I would never say what team someone should pull for more because that is not fair, but I do believe there are more O's fans than Ravens.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
There are two major storylines this year for the Super Bowl: Will Dwight Freeney play? Will Peyton Manning be considered the best quarterback of all-time if he wins Sunday? The Colts are preparing to play without Freeney, but they are claiming he only has a sprained ankle. Coach Jim Caldwell said if Freeney does not practice, which he didn't last week, he will not play. Sources claim he has a torn ligament in his ankle even though Caldwell disputed that yesterday. As for Manning, many analysts think he will stamp his legacy with a victory Sunday. I have said many times that Manning is the best quarterback in my lifetime, and many think he only falls short of Joe Montana, mainly because Montana has more Super Bowl victories. I understand that argument, but if Manning is able to win his second championship, there is no doubt in my mind that he will finally be considered the best.

An ugly game last night at Littlejohn Coliseum as the Clemson Tigers ended the Terps' four-game winning streak by defeating Maryland 62-53. The Terps shot 34.6 percent from the field and committed 26 turnovers. Maryland had a 2-point lead late in the game, but they were unable to capitalize. Along with the turnovers, the Terps only had 8 offensive rebounds compared to the Tigers' 20. Maryland will travel to Florida State on Thursday to take on the Seminoles who they defeated 77-68 earlier in the season. The lone bright spot for Maryland was the play of freshman Jordan Williams. Chicken Box Friday!

Happy Chicken Box Friday! The Terps are gearing up for their first true ACC test on Sunday night. Maryland travels to Littlejohn Coliseum to face the Clemson Tigers. Clemson is always a tough opponent especially at home, but I like how the first-place Terps are playing. Greivis Vasquez is playing under control and Landon Milbourne has become the second scoring option on a consistent basis that this team has lacked over the last couple of seasons. Sophomore Sean Mosley continues to mature as a basketball player, but he fills up the stat sheet every game as the do-it-all player. It would not be an offseason unless Ray Lewis uses the NFL Network to get his point across. Last offseason while Lewis was at the Pro Bowl, he discussed his upcoming free agency and his "flirtation" with the Dallas Cowboys. Yesterday, while the AFC was practicing, Deion Sanders interviewed Lewis in their normal playful exchange. Sanders asked Lewis who he was excited to see out at the Pro Bowl and Lewis said all the players. Sanders was not satisfied with the answer and told Lewis to answer the question. Lewis replied, "Vince Young, Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, big receivers, Vincent Jackson." I could be looking into this too much, but I think Lewis shares the same feelings as most Ravens' fans. However, Lewis dropping that nugget on "the network" is nothing new and has now become expected at his yearly offseason all-star game.

Way Back Wednesday!

Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be. The Terps improved to 4-1 in conference play and sole possession of first place in the ACC with their 81-59 victory over Miami. I do not know how excited to get about this team because they have yet to play the tough part of their schedule, but they are winning the games they are supposed to and winning them convincingly. The last couple of years, Maryland would have found a way to lose these games or they would have won by a couple of points. The biggest difference this season is Maryland is getting contributions from more than one or two guys. Four players scored in double figures last night and this has allowed Greivis Vasquez to play under control. I think for the first time in his career at Maryland, Vasquez truly trusts his teammates. Landon Milbourne has stepped up to become the second scorer, but Sean Mosley and the presence down low with Jordan Williams makes Vasquez play within the offense instead of trying to force shots all the time. He still will at times because that is the type of player he is, but the supporting cast is as good as it has been at Maryland in the last couple of seasons.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday: Be sure to tune to in to hear who our guest will be.
Chuck Driesell: The Maryland Assistant Basketball Coach will talk about the success the Terps are having in the ACC.
Michael Lombardi: The NFL Network analyst previews the Super Bowl.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
Miguel Tejada is expected to be in Baltimore today to take his physical and finalize the one-year contract that will reunite him with the Orioles. With Tejada coming back, there are people who are pointing out just how good of a trade that was when Andy MacPhail dealt Tejada to Houston for five players. When talking about the trades MacPhail has made, the Erik Bedard trade immediately comes up, and rightfully so. However, the one trade that goes overlooked and has the potential to help the Orioles for years to come, is the one where MacPhail traded Ramon Hernandez to the Cincinnati Reds for Ryan Freel, Brandon Waring, and Justin Turner. Freel never helped the Orioles last year, but MacPhail didn't trade Hernandez for him. MacPhail wanted to get rid of Hernandez while bringing in a prospect or two that could help Baltimore down the road.
Waring was named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Year after hitting 27 homeruns between Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie. Waring may eventually become a DH, but for now, he can play either corner position. Turner, finished the season with Baltimore and has the potential to break spring training as the Orioles' utility fielder. Turner can play 2nd, SS, and 3b, and he will be working as an outfielder in Sarasota as well. Robert Andino was the utility fielder last season, but Turner has the potential to play more positions while being a better hitter than Andino. All teams need depth and versatility, and MacPhail accomplished that when he traded a malcontent catcher that was of no use in Baltimore anymore.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Ken Rosenthal: The FOXSports.com senior MLB writer breaks down the offseason.
Kevin Blackistone: The AOL Fanhouse writer and contributor to ESPN's Around the Horn talks the latest headlines in sports.
Ralph Russo: The college football writer for the AP talks Senior Bowl.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
It was a great weekend in sports and on the local scene (yes, there can be a good sports weekend even if it does not involve the Ravens). The Terps improved to 3-1 in the ACC and tied for first place with Virginia with their 88-64 win against NC State on Saturday night. However, the big news came Saturday afternoon. The Orioles came to an agreement with free agent and former Oriole, Miguel Tejada. Andy MacPhail could not confirm the signing because Tejada has yet to pass his physical, but he did not deny it either saying, "I don't know how realistic I thought our potential acquisition was going to be," MacPhail said. "We always had him on the board, but I wasn't holding my breath. But we'll be pleased, I think, with the way things work out."
The criticism of this signing will be Tejada's involvement with steroids and his ability to play third base after playing shortstop his entire career. If a team tries to avoid players that were linked to steroids then most teams would not be able to field a ballclub. As for his transition from short to third, it should not have been a factor in deciding whether to pursure Tejada or not. Tejada has never been a gold glove caliber defensive player. The Orioles are hoping he can duplicate last season with the Astros (.313 avg, 46 doubles, 86 RBIs), with the possibility of hitting closer to 20 homeruns. Dave Trembley must decide if Tejada should hit in the 2 hole or down in the lineup and have a chance to drive in runs. Tejada can still hit for a high average and he doesn't strikeout, but he doesn't walk either. Also, Trembley must decide if one of the young players (Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones) can handle hitting 4th.

Lincoln Kennedy: The FOX Sports Radio analyst previews the Super Bowl.

Miguel Tejada Returns to Baltimore
Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun is reporting the Orioles have agreed to a one-year deal with free agent Miguel Tejada. More details to follow, but Baltimore is expected to move the former Oriole to third base and free agent acquisition Garrett Atkins will become the everyday first baseman. In four seasons with the Orioles, Tejada batted .311 with 102 homeruns and 429 RBIs. Tejada was traded to the Houston Astros following the 2007 season. SOURCE

Chicken Box Friday
Will Matt Wieters emerge as the middle of the order hitter in 2010?
Happy Chicken Box Friday! With the Ravens season over, the focus turns to the Orioles. With FanFest tomorrow, fans begin to examine the roster and the moves Andy MacPhail has made and wonder what exactly have they done this offseason. I wish MacPhail would have found a way to find a middle of the order hitter, but there was not a viable option in free agency that would have fit this team. I know some people will point out that Matt Holliday would have been nice, but for the years and money he wanted and received, it would not have been worth it long-term. MacPhail is hoping Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones, and/or newly acquired Garrett Atkins emerge and becomes the middle of the order presence this team desperately needs. It is easy to beat up on the Orioles for not making any "big" moves this offseason, but if a fan takes a step back and looks at the entire landscape of baseball, they will notice that the Orioles have not had a bad offseason. Jon Heyman from SI.com ranked the Orioles as the 4th best offseason in all of baseball. Heyman says the Orioles "have taken significant steps to improve their team." It won't be good enough this season to win the AL East or fight for a wild card, but the acquisitions of Atkins, starting pitcher Kevin Millwood, and relief pitcher Mike Gonzalez does make Baltimore better.
The 2008 season gave the Orioles their centerfielder in Adam Jones. The 2009 gave the Orioles three starting pitchers (Brad Bergesen, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman), their starting left fielder (Nolan Reimold), and starting catcher (Matt Wieters). I have a feeling the 2010 season will give the Orioles their starting third baseman in Josh Bell and starting first baseman in Brandon Snyder along with another starting pitcher.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Randy Monroe: The UMBC head basketball coach talks about his team.
Peter Schrager: The FOXSports.com writer breaks down the AFC/NFC Championship games.
Mike Nabors: The New Orleans Saints reporter from Cox Sports TV talks about the NFC Championship game.

WBW on The Rob Long Show

Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be. Coach Harbaugh spoke to the media yesterday to recap the season and his main message was to build off what they have done over the last two seasons and continue to become a championship caliber team. Harbaugh does not want to put a time on when they will win the Super Bowl, but he thinks they are heading that way. I know he is supposed to say that, but the combination of youth and veterans on the Ravens make it hard to argue that Baltimore will be a contender for years to come. It is exciting to see what this offense will become because of the continued development of Joe Flacco and Ray Rice along with the offensive line. As long as Ray Lewis is playing in Baltimore, the defense will do their part. The Ravens have never made the playoffs three straight seasons so history is working against them, but Coach Harbaugh's strength is to keep his team's focus on the game ahead and to never look past an opponent.

It is always interesting to listen to the players talk to the media on the day they are cleaning out their lockers. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the team and the players. When the team has their end of the season meeting, it will be the last time that all of those guys are in the same room together. For the Ravens, they understand that their roster could look completely different unless their is an uncapped year in the NFL for 2010. The fans have clamored for more receiving help and Baltimore may finally be forced to do that. Derrick Mason is a free agent and hinted at retirement yesterday, but also says he is open to returning to Baltimore. Kelley Washington, also a free agent, thinks he finally played himself into getting a nice contract somewhere. Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams are both potential free agents and may have worn out their welcome with the Ravens. Every other position on the roster will have the normal turnover, but it would not be surprising to see the Ravens bring in three new receivers to help Joe Flacco continue his maturation process.

The Future of the Ravens
At the conclusion of every NFL season, teams always have changes to their roster, and that will be no different for the Ravens now that their year is over after suffering a 20-3 loss to Indy. As I look at the players who could be leaving this team, I do not know how upset I will be seeing some of them go. The two obvious players that will leave a void would be Derrick Mason and Ed Reed. Not only will Mason have to re-sign with Baltimore, but he will also have to decide if he wants to continue playing. Mason proved this season he still can play at a high level, but it would be unfair to the team if he came back as the number one receiver. Reed said he is "50-50" on coming back to play next season. Reed has taken his share of criticism this season, but he proved again in the loss to Indy that he is still a "ball-hawk" and has the ability to turn the game around. It will be hard to find replacements for these two players that can make the impact that they have over the last couple of seasons. I think Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams have played their last games as Baltimore Ravens. Both will be unrestricted free agents unless there is no salary cap for the 2010 season. Clayton disappeared too many times throughout the season, catching one pass or less 9 times in the 16 games he played in (including playoffs). Williams could not get off the bench for most of the season, and when he finally had his chance, he was unable to capitalize on the opportunities that were given to him. The Ravens can and have to do a lot better than these two guys if they want to become serious contenders and allow Joe Flacco to continue his development entering his third season. The other players that could be leaving that I won't see as big losses are: Frank Walker, Trevor Pryce, Willis McGahee, and Le'Ron McClain. I know some will think I am crazy in thinking McClain won't be a big loss, but the money he will be asking and the position he plays, he can be replaced. However, the Ravens do need to find a way to keep unrestricted free agent Dawan Landry and restricted free agent Marshal Yanda. Both players bounced back from serious injuries in 2008 and played well in the second half of 2009 as starters. During the course of 2009, the Ravens were able to mix young talented players with the already established veteran core. I look at the defense that struggled early in the season, but turned their season around to finish top-5 in the NFL and they began to do that when rookies Lardarius Webb and Dannell Ellerbe became a focal point in the game plan. If the Ravens do lose either Reed or Landry, Tom Zbikowski proved in his second season that he can be a solid contributor. When talking about the Ravens' defense, Ray Lewis still has to be mentioned. In his 14th season, he was selected to his 7th All-Pro team. As long as Lewis is a Raven, the defense will always be one of the NFL's best. Haloti Ngata was finally selected to the Pro Bowl and was again a force in stopping the run. The offense struggled at times during the second-half of the season, but it is hard not be excited about this unit. Led by the duo of second-year players in Flacco and Ray Rice, the Ravens finally announced to the NFL world that they are starting to have an offense to match the always stout defense. Michael Oher will be a multiple pro bowler before his career is over, and Ben Grubbs and Yanda have solidified the guard positions. Jared Gaither fought injuries for most of the season, but played above-average overall. The question that the Ravens will have to decide is if they are a better team with Gaither at left tackle and Oher at right tackle or Oher at left tackle and Gaither learning how to play on the right side or they go out and find another right tackle. The core is there, but the team needs to find more receivers and I think they will. For the first time in a while, growth was made on the offensive side of the ball. John Harbaugh also struggled throughout his sophomore season, but he led his team to the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Most front offices give their head coaches three years to prove what kind of coach they are. The reason for this is because it takes a couple of seasons for a coach to get the players that match his philosophy all on the same team. With that said, Harbaugh has won since day 1 without a team that consists of his "guys." The young players that have been brought in (Flacco, Rice, Oher, Ellerbe, and Zbikowski) all fit Harbaugh's style, and with another offseason and draft, Harbaugh will be close to accomplishing that. The Baltimore Ravens have their share of problems and they finished the regular season at 9-7 because of it. They lacked playmakers on offense, pass rushers and cornerbacks on defense, but they found a way to advance to the second round of the playoffs while establishing a foundation for years to come. Joe Flacco is the right quarterback for this team and John Harbaugh is the right coach for this team. With that combination, and Ozzie Newsome making the personnel decisions, the Ravens will continue to be a tough opponent on Sundays.

Chicken Box Friday!

Happy Chicken Box Friday! We will give our score predictions during the show, but Saturday night's game between the Ravens and Indianapolis has a chance to be another classic. I have been on record of saying that the Ravens can't beat Indy. I think Indy just has the Ravens number. The Colts have proved they can blow Baltimore out, and that they can win the close game. The Ravens have kept Peyton Manning out of the endzone and still lost the game. The Ravens have scored five times and kept the Colts under 20 points and did not win. As well as Baltimore plays, it is never good enough to come out on the winning end. Manning has a 7-2 career record against the Ravens, but has won 7 seven straight. However, the three weeks off for the Colts has to have some kind of impact. They will either start off slow, play bad the entire game, or will wear down in the 4th quarter. As great as Manning is, he becomes "normal" in the playoffs which will play in the Ravens favor. I still stand by the Colts owning the Ravens, but in the playoffs, everything is thrown out the window. I also have to factor in that Baltimore is coming off their best game this season and have their confidence at the highest it has been. No matter the outcome, the Ravens have set themselves up for continued success in the near future.
Here is a rundown of today's show:
Dan Dierdorf: The CBS analyst will be calling the game on Saturday night.
Don Banks: The SI.com writer previews the NFL playoffs.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show

The anticipation is the hardest part. We just want Saturday to come so we can see if the Ravens can build off of their dominant performance against the New England Patriots. It doesn't make it easier that Indianapolis is the team standing in the way of Baltimore making the AFC Championship game two years in a row. As the Ravens do every week, there were select players that spoke to the media yesterday. It was funny listening to the contrasting tone between Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Ray Rice. Lewis' message was to enjoy these moments. He knows that this does not happen every year and if the players can understand that and take everything in, they will benefit from it. For Reed; he was all business. Reed even used the line, "there is nothing funny about playing Peyton Manning." Reed knows he does not have many more years left and he desperately wants a championship. As for Rice, he is the second-year player that is full of energy and can not wait until Saturday. He would play right now if he could. The one thing they all have in common is they understand Indianapolis is going to be a tough opponent and they have to be on top of their game if they are going to win on Saturday.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be. Maryland lost a tough game last night to Wake Forest in overtime, 85-83. The Terps had their opportunities to win the game in both regulation and in overtime, but they were unable to make the clutch shot. The Demon Deacons had a size advantage over Maryland, but the Terps were able to out rebound Wake 43-41. However, the height advantage caused Dino Gregory to foul out and freshman Jordan Williams to finish the game with four fouls. Greivis Vasquez finished with 30 points, but forced a couple of ill-advised shots at the end of regulation and in overtime. Maryland battled back from an 8-point second half deficit and proved they can play with a more athletic team, but they could not overcome the missed free throws and turnovers late in the game.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
Mark McGwire admits he used steroids and we are supposed to be shocked?! The only reason he finally talked about his use of steroids is because he is now the St. Louis Cardinals' hitting coach. McGwire knows if he did not talk now, there would be a circus at spring training and he would become a distraction (there still will be a circus and he will be a distraction). .jpg) I always felt steroids helped ballplayers, but they still have to have the ability to hit a baseball. In McGwire's case, I think he had the career he did because of steroids. In Barry Bonds' case, he was a Hall of Famer already, but became the best power hitter once he started using. I will never understand why Bonds was chosen as the poster boy for the "steroid era." The only reason he decided to use steroids is because he looked around at the other players who were using and they were being cheered for their accolades and he knew they weren't even close to the caliber of player that he was.
I don't blame one player that decided to "experiment" with steroids. It was part of the baseball cultural for over a decade. My problem is that no one will admit that they used steroids because they wanted to become a better player. Monday on The Rob Long Show
Leading up to Sunday's game, the keys for the Ravens were to start fast, establish the run, pressure Tom Brady, and commit turnovers. I thought they would have to accomplish three of those keys in order to defeat the New England Patriots. I had no idea that they would be able to do all four and do it in dominating fashion. Everyone was hoping that the Ravens would be able to limit the penalites and play a complete game, but no one really thought it would actually happen. Baltimore dominated the Patriots from the opening possession and did not take their foot off the pedal for the entire game as they cruised to a 33-14 victory and will head to Indianapolis to face Peyton Manning and the Colts on Saturday night. Ray Rice and Willis McGahee again led the Ravens' offense as the Patriots were unable to stop the run all afternoon. Joe Flacco was more of a spectator as he only threw 10 times, but he converted a couple of huge third downs with his arm and his feet that kept drives alive.
Greg Mattison and the defense were criticized for much of the season, but they played lights out yesterday. From New England's first possession when Terrell Suggs was able to strip Tom Brady and recover the fumble to the secondary intercepting three passes, the Patriots were never able to find a rhythm. Was it me, or did Randy Moss look uninterested to play yesterday? The Ravens are playing as well as they possibly can as they get ready to face the one team that has had their number over the last several seasons in Indianapolis.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Barry Wilner: The AP writer was in New England and will recap the game.
Tony Lombardi: The Ravens24x7.com writer breaks down yesterday's game.
Ken Zalis: The FansFantasyFootball.com editor gives his thoughts on the game.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! As a reminder, we are back at Jilly's in Ellicott City today at 1 p.m. for chicken and sports talk, so come out and join us! We will be giving our prediction for Sunday's game during the show today so be sure to listen, but right now I am still torn on who I think will win. As a fan, I think the Ravens will find a way to win, but if I try to be objective, I think the Ravens will lose in a close game with penalties and key mistakes costing them the game as it has all season long. At this point in the season, a team is who they are. The Ravens are a team who struggle against quality quarterbacks, commit untimely penalties, and always find a way to lose against the better teams. However, the defense will do enough to keep Baltimore in the ballgame as they have all season, and it will be up to Joe Flacco, Ray Rice, and company to find a way to make enough plays on offense that will lead the Ravens to victory.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Barry Wilner: The AP writer breaksdown the NFL playoffs.
Richard Cirminiello: The CollegeFootballNews.com writer recaps last night's National Championship game.
John Carchedi: The NESN analyst previews Ravens-Patriots.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show
As they often do, the baseball writers flexed their muscles on Wednesday when it was announced that Roberto Alomar will have to wait at least another year before he can be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Not only does Alomar's st ats compare to the other second basemen that are in the Hall, but he WAS the best second basemen during his era. That should always be the deciding factor. Did this player dominate his position during his playing career? The obvious answer is yes in regards of Alomar. The 12-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner fell just short of being inducted, but it should have never been close. I think the baseball writers often think it is a game when it comes to voting for a player, but it is not. It is a tragedy that one of the best second basemen of all-time and the best during his era has to wait another year before finding out if he will be enshrined in Cooperstown.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! The Ravens return to practice today as they begin their preparation for the New England Patriots. Over the last week, fans have started to criticize Joe Flacco and his performance during his sophomore season. They are beginning to wonder if he is the guy that can lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl. As any second-year player in any sport, Flacco has to continue to improve his game, but I do not understand the criticism that he is receiving. I think there are times that Flacco's passes sail high and he probably could get rid of the ball quicker when the pocket collapses, but I would rather Flacco take a sack then throw an ill-advised pass.
Overall, he has only been sacked 4 more times than he was all of last season. His stats improved in all categories and with more passes thrown this season he still finished with the same amount of interceptions he had during his rookie campaign. Flacco rushed less this season, but I think that is by design as the Ravens do not want him to take any more hits then he should. Also, I think his ankle injury has limited his mobility and has caused him to become more reluctant to run. As a coach, you want to see your players improve every season, and Flacco did that. I understand some people want to see more emotion out of him, which I think is the most overrated characteristic in a player, but he is the leader of this offense and the players have his back. In his second season, Flacco has again led the Ravens to the playoffs and a chance to hold the Lombardi Trophy.
Here is the rundown of today's guests:

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
There is often talk that the NFL is "out" to get the Ravens. Many skeptics thought the Ravens would have to play a tough New England team on Saturday, forcing them to make a quick turnaround after playing on the west coast and working on short rest. However, the Ravens will play on Sunday at 1 p.m., the time they are most accustomed to. Coach John Harbaugh announced that the players would be off on Monday and Tuesday, and will begin to prepare as a team for the Patriots on Wednesday. NFL players are used to a routine and the slightest adjustment can throw them off, but for Baltimore, they will be able to stick to the schedule they have for most of the season. The talk of the NFL is "out" to get Baltimore can be put to rest, until of course, the first flag is thrown for roughing the passer on Tom Brady.
Here is the rundown of today's scheduled guests:
Tim Donaghy: The former NBA ref and author of Personal Foul: A First Person Account of the Scandal that Rocked the NBA will discuss the betting scandal he was involved in.
Dannell Ellerbe: The Ravens' linebacker talks about his big game on Sunday.

As it has been all season, it never is easy for the Ravens. Baltimore will head to New England on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the first round of the NFL playoffs after defeating the Oakland Raiders 21-13 yesterday. The Ravens' passing game was never able to find a rhythm as Joe Flacco was sacked 4 times and threw for a season-worst 102 yards. However, not much was needed through the air as Willis McGahee, Ray Rice, and company compiled 240 yards on the ground. McGahee finished with a career-high 167 rushing yards and three touchdowns while Ray Rice became the second Raven to finish the season with over 2,000 yards.
The Ravens have their share of problems, but so do all of the playoff teams. As they prepare for the Patriots, they can scratch Wes Welker off the list of players to worry about. Welker has reportedly tore his ACL and MCL and will likely miss Sunday's game. Baltimore had a chance to defeat the Patriots earlier in the season, but they were unable to capitalize on some of the opportunities that they had.

New Year Edition on RLS
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and welcomed 2010 with a bang. We will give our score for Sunday's game during the show, but I can not see the Ravens going to Oakland and losing. I know Oakland has defeated a couple of quality opponents during the season, but Baltimore has too much riding on this game. If the Ravens jump out to an early lead and play physical with the Raiders, Oakland will pack it in and count down to when they can start their vacation.

The Maryland Terps lost to William & Mary last night at home 83-77. The Terps always lose the same way: they can't defend the three point (gave up eight 3's), they can't shoot the three (4 of 25), and teams are able to break the press for easy buckets. Maryland is ready to head into conference play and they do not have a solid out of conference win this season. As has been the case for the last few seasons, the Terps will be on the bubble when Selection Sunday arrives.

Newsworthy Afternoon for the O's
All has been quiet in Birdland for the last couple of weeks until today. Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com reported that the Orioles made an eight-year, $130 million dollar offer to free agent slugger Matt Holliday. Ringolsby also reported that general manager Andy MacPhail discussed the possibility of arranging a meeting between himself, Holliday, and Orioles owner Peter Angelos. However, as MacPhail is known to keep things to himself, he disputed this rumor to Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun,saying, "there's no validity to that report whatsoever." In other news, former Oriole shortstop Mike Bordick will return to the organization as their new minor league offensive coordinator. Bordick told Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun,"it'll be getting guys to understand the importance of small ball. The game has kind of trended away from the three-run home run. A lot of times it is about getting into scoring position and taking advantage of those situations when you need to score runs, especially in the AL East."

Way Back Wednesday!

I figured Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Le'Ron McClain would be Miami bound for the Pro Bowl, but I thought Haloti Ngata and Ray Rice would be snubbed. Ngata has been deserving before but has just missed out until getting the invitation this season. Rice, in his second year, has been the most consistent offensive player for Baltimore, and his 1,952 yards from scrimmage ranks second in the NFL, behind fellow Pro Bowler Chris Johnson.
The Ravens will be back at practice today as they prepare for their "must-win" game against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The most frustrating part about this season has been how the Ravens have lost. In every loss, the word "if" can be applied. If the Ravens made the field goal they would have won, if they didn't drop a touchdown pass or commit two penalties on touchdowns they would have won. That is why I am encouraged if they fix the mistakes, they can make a run in the playoffs if they are able to win Sunday. However, I don't think a team can change in Week 17, and unfortunately, the same mistakes will find a way to haunt the Ravens before their season ends.

The rollercoaster ride of the NFL continued last night as the Vikings dropped their third game in the last four falling to the Chicago Bears in overtime 36-30. It was just three weeks ago that everyone predicted a Vikings-Saints matchup in the NFC Championship, but New Orleans has struggled lately as well, losing two games in a row. This is why I never understand the statement, "we don't deserve to make the playoffs." What?! Just when you thought you figured the NFL out, it throws you a curve ball, and everything is jumbled again. The Ravens have their problems, but every team does. If they find a way to defeat Oakland on Sunday and make they playoffs, they have just as good of a chance as any other team.

After the debacle in Pittsburgh yesterday, the Ravens still control their own destiny. There are those who think Baltimore does not deserve to go to the playoffs, but it has been proven time and time again in any sport, once you get in, anything can happen. However, the Ravens have to play better against quality opponents. They handle the bad teams (Bears, Lions) with ease, but when it comes to the better teams they play conservative and tight. To top it off, they commit too many penalties. Yesterday's game was tough to watch. Everytime the Ravens made a play, you held your breath and waited to cheer because you knew a flag was coming. There is no excuse for Haloti Ngata's and Oniel Cousins' personal foul penalties. I do not know what Coach John Harbaugh can do to prevent the penalties from happening, but until it is fixed, the penalties will continue to hold the Ravens back.

I hope everyone has a happy holiday! We will give our score predictions during the show since we will not be on tomorrow because of the Christmas holiday, but Sunday's game between the Ravens and Steelers will be like every other game between the two. Alex Marvez from FOXSports.com thinks Baltimore and Pittsburgh both make the playoffs, which means he thinks the Ravens lose on Sunday. When these two teams face each other, records can be thrown out the window. As it has always been, this game will be close in the 4th quarter and the team that makes the key play at the end will win. I hope the Ravens are the team that makes the big play, but I can't ignore the loss of Lardarius Webb to the secondary and the return game and the impact that will have.

Way Back Wednesday!

Happy Way Back Wednesday! We spent a lot of time yesterday talking about the cornerback situation for the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, at this point in the season a team has to go with what they have. The signing of Corey Ivy was out of necessity, but for the Ravens to have success the last two games and possibly in the playoffs it will be Frank Walker, Dominique Foxworth, and Chris Carr stepping up. In my opinion, the loss of Lardarius Webb will be felt more in the return game. Webb averaged 26.2 yards on kickoffs, good for 8th in the NFL. The secondary will continue to be inconsistent, but the spark and the field position Webb continued to give the Ravens will be the biggest loss.

Monday's Show in Review
The season ending knee injury to Lardarius Webb will be a major blow to the Ravens for the rest of the season. I think there are three players that will be nearly impossible to replace for Baltimore and Webb is one of them. I put Joe Flacco and Ray Rice in the same category. Webb brings an explosiveness in the kick return game that the team lacked prior to him becoming the full-time return man. Webb also brought a physicality to the secondary that was severly lacking before he earned more playing time. The secondary struggled before Webb and played above average with Webb. With two must-win games and one this week in Pittsburgh, the loss of Webb will be felt immediately and either Chris Carr or Frank Walker have to step their game up to a level that they have not played all season or the Ravens could find themselves looking outside the playoffs as quickly as they found themselves in the number 5 seed position.
- Rob opened up the show discussing the Ravens victory over the Bears. Rob also wondered if Derrick Mason is a Hall of Famer and what player will step up in the last two games.
- Ross Tucker from USA Sports Radio joined the show to give his thoughts on the Ravens-Bears game. Ross was the color commentator for the game and he gave his opinion on the future of Lovie Smith. Ross also weighed in on the problems Jay Cutler has faced all season long and what he thought of Joe Flacco's performance.
- Jerry Coleman, host of Sports with Coleman came on the program to recap the game. Jerry says everyone should not get too excited because the Ravens are beating teams that they are supposed to beat.
- Tony Lomardi from Ravens24x7.com told us his Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Megan Fox.
- Brent Harris from ComcastSportsNet looked ahead to the Pittsburgh game and what the Ravens will do now that Webb will be out.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! The Ravens were helped big time last night as the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars. As of right now, the Ravens have the sixth and last playoff spot. I do not know how the tiebreakers will shake out if the Ravens are tied with multiple teams for that last spot, but they would have positioned themselves well for a run in the playoffs if they finish at 10-6. That march continues Sunday at home against the Chicago Bears. We will have our score picks during the show, but I think the Ravens revert back to their 2008 December ways for a week. The Bears are allowing 128.8 rushing yards per game this season and Cam Cameron will take advantage of that. The weather is not supposed to be great, but I don't think that will factor into why the Ravens will run the ball. Ray Rice and Le'Ron McClain will carry the load and help Baltimore improve to 8-6 heading into a big game against Pittsburgh on Christmas weekend.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Ken Zalis: FansFantasyFootball.com
Bill Hancock: The BCS Executive Director will preview all the BCS games.
Tom McCarthy: The Sports USA Radio play-by-play announcer will be in Baltimore Sunday to call the Ravens-Bears game.
John Carchedi: The NESN anchor will go around the sports world.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show
Wednesday night was very busy for Andy MacPhail and the Orioles. The Baltimore Sun announced that the O's reached agreements with relief pitcher Mike Gonzalez and third baseman Garrett Atkins. Gonzalez, a 31-year-old lefty, reportedly has signed a 2-year deal and will become the late inning presence that was lost when George Sherrill was traded to the Dodgers. Gonzalez was used as the left-handed setup man for the Braves last season, but he has demonstrated the ability to close games as he saved 24 games in 2006 for the Pirates.
Atkins, 30, becomes the stopgap third baseman MacPhail has looked for while the team awaits the arrival of prospect Josh Bell. The terms of the deal is unclear, but it is believed to be a one-year contract. The right-handed hitter struggled in 2009 for the Colorado Rockies, but from 2006 to 2008 he totaled more than 20 homeruns and 99 RBIs each season.
I like the Gonzalez deal more than Atkins. Gonzalez will sure up the backend of the bullpen and can be used as a lefty specialist, setup man, or closer. I am happy to see Atkins reportedly signed a one-year deal. I am concerned because of his 2009 performance and that his stats declined after his big 2006 season. Also, did he benefit from playing in the hitter friendly Coors Field? However, he will be the stopgap guy until Bell is ready, and he can play first base and be used as the DH. Also, Ken Rosenthal from FOXSports.com is reporting that the Orioles are interested in free agent slugger Matt Holliday. It is not known, however, how serious their interest is.
Here is the rundown of today's guests:
Gary Williams: The Maryland basketball head coach will talk about the Terps' season so far.
Alex Marvez: The NFL writer for FOXSports.com breaks down the latest news in the NFL and gives us an update on Chris Henry.
David Steele: The AOL Fanhouse writer talks Ravens, Orioles, and all the latest headlines in sports.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Bud Selig announced that he has formed an advisory committee that will examine on-field issues. One of the issues that will be up for debate is the DH rule. The committee, consisting of several high respected baseball people including Andy MacPhail and Frank Robinson, will have to decide if the AL and NL should both have the DH or if they should get rid of the rule all together. I hope that they do not change the rule. The DH is used in every league until a person reaches the National League. Whenever I think of a pitcher batting, I picture Daniel Cabrera. In his 14 career at-bats as a Baltimore Oriole, Cabrera struck out...14 times! In total, he has K'd 24 times in 32 at-bats. How does that make baseball a better game? I know Cabrera is one example, and there are examples of pitchers who can actually hit, but overall, they can't. They wear a jacket as they run around the bases! Managers are constantly giving them the sign to bunt, even if it is not a situation for them to. Again, how does this make baseball a better game?

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
Indianapolis Colts' head coach Jim Caldwell announced that he will approach Thursday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as he has all season long. The starters are expected to play the entire game unless they have an injury. I understand the Colts have already locked up home field advantage throughout the playoffs but it is not too often a team has a chance to be perfect during the regular season and the playoffs. The goal is to win the Super Bowl, but when a team can make history, the coach should try as hard as he can to allow that to happen. Also, there is still three games left in the season. I understand if this was the last game, but football is all about timing and if a coach starts having players sit now, it could really come back to haunt him when the playoff starts. Caldwell's announcement is great news for the Ravens as the Jaguars are still ahead of Baltimore for the last playoff spot.

Dannell Ellerbe: The Ravens' linebacker will talk about his season and preview the last three games.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! The Pittsburgh Steelers have now lost five games in a row after the Cleveland Browns defeated them last night 13-6. I know the Steelers have injuries, but they still have too much talent to be losing to teams like the Chiefs, Raiders, and now the Browns. The one thing about the Ravens is they do not lose to bad football teams. All of their losses this season have been against teams who are currently in the playoffs if the season ended today. I will give my score prediction during the show, but with the Detroit Lions coming to town Sunday, I think the Ravens win easily. Unfortunately, this game isn't really going to tell us how the rest of the season will go, but it will be a win in December and it will keep Baltimore in the playoff hunt.

Orioles Close to Deal for Kevin Millwood
***Updated at 6:35 p.m.*** The Orioles have officially traded relief pitcher Chris Ray and a player to be named later to the Texas Rangers for veteran starter Kevin Millwood and an undisclosed amount of cash. In 13 seasons, Millwood has compiled a 155-121 record with a 4.02 ERA. Millwood has also displayed durability throughout his career as he has made 30 or more starts in nine of the last 12 seasons.
Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Orioles are close to a deal that would send relief pitcher Chris Ray to the Texas Rangers for starting pitcher Kevin Millwood and cash. Millwood, 34, represents the veteran innings eater that Andy MacPhail has targeted to help mentor the young pitching staff. Millwood posted a 13-10 record last season with a 3.67 ERA while pitching 198 2/3 innings. Ray, coming off of ligament-reconstruction surgery on his right elbow, struggled in 2009, going 0-4 with a 7.27 ERA in 46 appearances. Source

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to listen to hear our Pizza John's trivia question to find out who our guest will be. The Orioles have not made any moves so far during the winter meetings, but they have been linked to many players. I know that sounds like every other year, which is true, but Andy MacPhail is trying to balance long term success with a quick fix. Baltimore has been rumored to Texas Rangers' starting pitcher Kevin Millwood. However, the Rangers are asking for some of the O's young pitchers, specifically, David Hernandez. Does MacPhail trade a promising young arm for a one-year stop gap to help mentor the young rotation? I wouldn't, and I think he feels the same way.
The Orioles are also interested in San Diego Padres' third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff. Kouzmanoff, who was second to Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals in the voting for the Gold Glove Award, has averaged 18 or more home runs in each of his three seasons with the Padres. Again, the Padres want young pitching in return, but the good thing about Kouzmanoff is he comes cheap, is more of a long-term option, and can move around the diamond. MacPhail does not want to block prospects Brandon Snyder and Josh Bell, but he also knows he has holes to fill and those guys are not sure things. He is trying to take the same approach he had last year with the young starting pitching. MacPhail wants the young guys to show they are ready, but he also does not want to block them with long-term contracts. However, he still has to field a competitive team in Baltimore. It is a tough balance, and the O's are not in position to trade their young talent for stop gaps like Millwood. However, Kouzmanoff is the type of player the Orioles should be targeting: cheap, versatile, productive, and can still be viewed as a long term option.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday guest: Listen for the Pizza John's trivia question.
Ed Lee: The Baltimore Sun writer breaks down the Ravens.

Monday's Show in Review
I guess the most frustrating part of the Ravens' season has been the regression of Joe Flacco and the offensive line. The secondary and the defensive line were both question marks heading into the season so the play of both this season has not come as a surprise. However, after the solid start by Flacco, rookie Michael Oher and company, they have struggled. Has the league caught up to them? Have they been unable to make the needed adjustments? Is their a clash in philosophy by the coaching staff and it is hurting the players? I wish I knew the answer, but I do know there are talented players on the roster, but the team is struggling to earn a playoff berth. There are four games left for Baltimore to fix this and try to sneak in and continue playing in January, but they might run out of time and there might be too many flaws that can be fixed. I know most people are focused on the Ravens, but the MLB winter meetings are taking place this week in Indianapolis. FOXSports.com has done a great job covering the meetings by blogging continuous updates on the latest breaking news.
Here is the link to read the updates. The Baltimore Sun and FOXSports.com has reported that the Orioles are interested in Texas Rangers' starting pitcher Kevin Millwood, but no deal seems imminent at this time. I will have my own opinion on this if talks intensify. - Rob gave his thoughts on last night's game and where he thinks the Ravens stand now.
- Jerry Coleman from Sports with Coleman (3-6 on Fox 1370) joined the show to talk about the Baltimore's loss. - Former Raven Brad Jackson came on the program to talk about the latest involving Tiger Woods and what is wrong with the Ravens.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
The Ravens again committed too many costly penalties and the offense struggled in the first half as they have most of the season. Joe Flacco played one of his worst games in his young career, throwing three interceptions, including one in the endzone in the fourth quarter. The offensive line played poorly all night as they were unable to get any push at the line of scrimmage. The secondary, playing without surprise scratch Ed Reed, could not slow down Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers' passing attack, and have now committed an NFL-high 10 pass-interference penalties. Baltimore's playoff chances took a major hit as they are now one game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars (7-5) and tied with three other 6-6 teams.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Mike Duffy: The BaltimoreRavens.com writer recaps the Ravens-Packers game and talks about the feeling in the postgame locker room.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
Monday has finally arrived! After watching great college football over the weekend, along with all the NFL games, I am ready for some Ravens' football. The playoff picture in the AFC continues to be a mess, which makes tonight's game even more of a must-win. The Pittsburgh Steelers lost a stunner to the Oakland Raiders, but until they are eliminated, they will continue to be a threat to make the playoffs. I still do not think the Jacksonville Jaguars are a playoff caliber team, but they continue to win. As for the game tonight, we will give our prediction during the show, but I think the Ravens pull out a victory. The defense has played well over the last three games, and the offense is starting to get out of their mid-season funk. I know Green Bay's defense was ranked #1 heading into this week, but they do allow points. Aaron Rodgers will be able to move the ball, but Baltimore will force field goals. That will be the difference as the Ravens will score touchdowns, and the Packers will settle for three points.

Chicken Box Friday on The Rob Long Show
Happy Chicken Box Friday! There was a lot of hype heading into last night's Oregon-Oregon State game and it did not disappoint. Both teams took the lead from each other often throughout the game, but Oregon was able to hold on for the 37-33 victory. I would comment on the Jets-Bills game that was played in Toronto, but after I watched Mark Sanchez overthrow an open receiver in the endzone by 5 yards and Braylon Edwards have a ball bounce off his facemask when he was open and would have walked in for a touchdown, I decided that was enough.

Happy Way Back Wednesday! The Maryland Terps used the last 9 minutes of last night's game to pull away from the Indiana Hoosiers and win 80-68. The Terps (5-2) used a 26-14 run to earn the victory as they head into Sunday's matchup with #3 ranked Villanova Wildcats. Even though Greivis Vasquez scored a game-high 23 points, he continues to struggle with his shot. Sophomore Sean Mosley has been the Terps most consistent player all season and he demonstrated that again last night. Mosley played 39 of the possible 40 minutes and scored 13 points while adding 9 rebounds. The Terps return to the court tonight as they head to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Maryland returned from Maui dropping the last two games after their win against Chiminade, and senior Landon Milbourne hinted the entire team may not have been focused on playing the games in paradise. "A couple of guys on the team might have been caught up in 'the Maui moment' instead of realizing we had to go out there and win games."
Greivis Vasquez needs to get involved earlier in the game instead of waiting for when the game has already been decided and the Terps have to make their foul shots. As always, Maryland needs to do a better job defending the 3-point play.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Jimmy Patsos: The Loyola basketball head coach joins the show to preview their game against Morgan State tonight.
Lincoln Kennedy: The former NFL offensive lineman and current Fox Sports Radio analyst weighs in on the current issues in the league.
David Scott: The editor of CoachCal.com breaks down the world of college basketball.

Monday's Show in Review

The Ravens' have positioned themselves well heading into the month of December. All a player and coach ask for is to have a shot to make the playoffs down the stretch run. Ideally, a team is playing for home field advantage or for a division title, but making the playoffs is the most important goal as anything can happen in January. Last night's game against the Steelers went as I thought it would. The Ravens were hoping they would be able to score a couple of times against the tough Pittsburgh defense and force Dennis Dixon to beat them. Dixon played well and made one big play using his feet, but when the game went into overtime and Dixon had to drive the team down the field, he was unable to and threw an interception. Baltimore's offense was able to put the ball in the endzone unlike last week against the Colts which ended up being the difference in the game. The improved play by the secondary will be put to the test again a week from today against Green Bay as Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are starting to fire on all cylinders.
- Rob returned from vacation and opened up the show discussing the Ravens' big win with Mike Duffy from BaltimoreRavens.com, Ken Zalis from FansFantasyFootball.com and Anne Boone-Simanski from Style Magazine.
- Tony Lombardi from Ravens24x7.com joined the show to give his thoughts on the Ravens-Steelers game.

Friday on The Rob Long Show
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving yesterday! After eating all day and watching three blowouts in the NFL, it is now time to focus on Sunday's game against the hated Steelers. I know there are people who think a 9-7 team will make the playoffs in the AFC, and that may be true, but I do not feel comfortable about the Ravens making it if they finish with that record. The Ravens have to go 5-1 the last six games in order for them to feel like they will be playing after their 16-week schedule. It starts this Sunday, and playoff caliber teams make their runs late November and into December.
Here is a rundown of today's show:
Terry Ford: Rob is off, so Terry will be previewing the Ravens-Steelers game.
Jason Cole: The Yahoo! Sports writer will discuss the NFL.
Aaron Wilson: The Carroll County Times writer gives his thoughts on the Ravens-Steelers game.
John Harris: The Pittsburgh-Tribune Review writer talks Ravens-Steelers.

Wednesday on The Rob Long Show
The Terps fell to Cincinnati last night 69-57 in their first test of the season. The score does not indicate how badly Maryland (4-1) was beaten by the Bearcats as they were outrebounded 47-33 and only shot 35.8 percent from the field. Cincinnati had more size and quickness than Gary Williams' squad and Greivis Vasquez continued to struggle until late in the game. Maryland went 6 minutes without scoring in the first half and they were unable to stop sophomore center Yancy Gates (17 points, 13 rebounds). The Terps are a better team than they displayed last night, but the problems that plagued them last year (rebounding, shooting, quickness) showed up again in the loss. Vasquez has been the heartbeat for the team his entire career, and when he struggles and does not play with the energy that he usually does, the rest of the team suffers from it.
Here is a rundown of today's show:
Terry Ford: Rob is off today, so Terry Ford will be filling in.
Eric Prisbell: The Washington Post writer breaks down last night's Maryland loss.
Jason La Canfora: The NFL Network analyst weighs in on the latest NFL headlines.
Dan Connolly: The Baltimore Sun writer gives his thoughts on the Orioles' offseason.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
It is officially Steelers week. The Ravens are still in the playoff picture with six games to go and as a coach, a player, and a fan, all you can ask is to be in position to make the playoffs late in November. The Ravens have accomplished that, but they still have an uphill climb. They have to take care of their own business, and hope that other teams start losing. The defense is finally playing at a high level again, but the offense needs to figure out how to score touchdowns. I will be optimistic and look at Sunday's game as a positive. They were finally able to move the ball which they have not done in a couple of weeks, but they were just unable to put the ball in the endzone. That is a huge concern, obviously, but I think the offensive woes are close to being a thing of the past.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Matt Bowen: The former NFL player and contributor for NationalFootballPost.com talks the latest headlines in the NFL.
Ralph Russo: The AP college football writer weighs in the world of college football.
David Ginsburg: The AP writer gives his thoughts on the Ravens, Terps, and Orioles.

Monday's Show in Review
In a disappointing season with crushing defeats, the loss Sunday to the Colts may be the hardest to take. Going into the game, the perception to beat Indianapolis has always been: Control the clock to keep Peyton Manning off the field. The Ravens accomplished that. Somehow force turnovers. The Ravens accomplished that. Find a way to contain Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. The Ravens accomplished that.
This is why yesterday's game is so frustrating. The Ravens did everything right except for the one stat that matters in all of sports; the scoreboard. It is easy to blame Cam Cameron, John Harbaugh, Ed Reed's lateral attempt, and Joe Flacco's interception as factors the led to the outcome of the game, but, if you pride yourself as a physical team, you have to gain the one yard and score the touchdown. A popular saying in sports is "find a way." The 2009 Baltimore Ravens have found a way to not get the job done, and unfortunately, it may mean they are sitting home watching the playoffs wondering what could have been.
- Rob opened up the show talking about yesterday's game with Mike Duffy from BaltimoreRavens.com, Ken Zalis from FansFantasyFootball.com and Anne-Boone Simanski.
- Jerry Coleman, host of "Sports with Coleman" came on the program to weigh in on yesterday's defeat.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! I have said since April that I do not think the Ravens will win on Sunday. The Colts, like the Bengals, seem to have the Ravens' number. They match-up very well against Baltimore, and it is nearly impossible to stop Peyton Mannin g. The argument to keep Manning off the field to beat the Colts is a good one, but that is easier said than done. Manning doesn't need to have the ball 30 plus minutes to score, as he has proven that time time again. The Ravens are actually going to have to score in the first half, and continue to score to keep up with Indianapolis. They just have to hope they make the one stop in crunch time in order to pull out a victory.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:

Here is a rundown of today's guests:
The injury to Terrell Suggs is a huge one and might be too much for the Ravens to overcome. There have been people who have criticized Suggs' play this season, but they will realize quickly the impact he has had during his career now that he is out. I have no feelings toward the signing of Billy Cundiff. I hope he is the right guy, and I hope he is able to help this team win. This is a big 3-game stretch for Baltimore, and if they do not win at least two games, then they can pretty much forget about playing after Week 17.

Way Back Wednesday!
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be. The Ravens return to practice today and will be working on a short week as they get ready to face the undefeated Indianapolis Colts in Baltimore on Sunday. I will give my prediction on Friday, but I have been consistent in saying the R avens will not win. I hope I am wrong, but I do not think they match-up well against the Colts. The Ravens' offense better start faster than they have over the last few games or they will be down two touchdowns like they were in Minnesota and against the Bengals. The release of kicker Steve Hauschka yesterday was the right move. The Ravens could not afford to have their struggling kicker on the same field Sunday as the guy he replaced. This is the first big mistake in the John Harbaugh era. I agree it was time to part ways with Stover, but I think they should have tried to find a more established replacement, especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Terrell Suggs' Agent Not Happy
According to Aaron Wilson from the National Football Post, Terrell Suggs' agent is not happy with Brady Quinn. "That cat should be fined as much as anybody is fined that hits the quarterback," Gary Wichard said. "That's ridiculous. I don't understand what he was trying to do. It was blatant. It's absolutely criminal. It's about as nasty as it gets." Wichard also mentioned that Suggs could be out for the entire season because of the illegal block, but nothing official has been reported. Wichard went on to say, "The guy had total control and went right for his knee. You can't call that an accident. It was premeditated. The quarterback zeroed in on Terrell's knee. That's absurd. The ball carrier was right in front of him." "Going at someone's knee can really have a huge effect on what happens as far as a guy maybe being gone for the year. It's ridiculous. There was no reason to do that...You're a quarterback, dude," Wichard said. "You can't tackle, so don't take a shot at his knee. This isn't going to sit well with a lot of other defensive players. Dwight Freeney is absolutely pissed off." The Ravens defeated the Cleveland Browns 16-0 on Monday Night Football and are set to face the undefeated Indianapolis Colts in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Wilson-Terrell-Suggs-agent-rips-Brady-Quinn-following-potential-seasonending-injury.html

Monday's Show in Review
On the show today, I predicted a Ravens victory by the score of 27-13. I understand the argument that this is Cleveland's Super Bowl and they will lay it all on the line as this is the only game going on and they want to impress their peers, but they are an awful football team. There are some who think the Ravens are not a good football team, but I am not ready to admit that...yet. Baltimore has more playmakers on both sides of the football, and I think they understand the urgency of getting a win against an opponent that is not as good as they are. Without overlooking the Browns, the Ravens know the schedule that remains, and while many people will say that Cleveland is a desperate team, I think John Harbaugh's team is actually the more desperate one.
- Ed Lee from The Baltimore Sun joined the show to preview the Ravens-Browns game. Ed gave his thoughts on why the Ravens start slow on offense, and what he thinks the defense needs to do to improve. Ed also talked about the recent criticism Rex Ryan has recently received.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
Gameday has finally arrived! For all the negative talk last week about the Ravens' playoff chances, a win tonight puts them right back in the middle of the hunt. Obviously the division title is still in reach, but with the Bengals sweeping the Ravens and the Steelers, the deficit may be too much to overcome, and it might be time to focus on the two wildcard spots. The roller coaster ride that is the NFL was in full display yesterday and because of that, a victory tonight against the Browns is that much more important. I said it last week; until the Ravens lose to an opponent with a record under .500, I will continue to think that they will not have a letdown. Under John Harbaugh, the Ravens take care of teams that they are supposed to beat. I will give my score during the show, but the Ravens win this game, and they win it convincingly.

Chicken Box Friday!
Happy Chicken Box Friday! Gary Williams and the Terps open up their season tonight at home against Charleston Southern in what should be the start of another successful season. I do not expect them to win the ACC or make the Final Four, but it is not unrealistic to say they will be a top-25 team for most of the year. For all the critics about Greivis Vasquez, Maryland would not have the expectations they do if he decided to jump to the NBA. I always agreed with Rob; Vasquez has never been the problem, it was the talent around him. However, this season, the Terps will have talent around Vasquez as he will finally have a couple of big men he can rely on. Even though Jordan Williams and James Padgett are both freshman, they are immediately better than the "bigs" the Terps have had over the last couple of seasons.
Senior Landon Milbourne has improved every season he has been at College Park and sophomore Sean Mosley should make the next step in becoming a quality college basketball player. Coach Williams will go with the three-guard starting lineup with Eric Hayes returning to allow Maryland to have three starting seniors. For the first time in the last couple of seasons, Maryland has the talent to be a contender in the ACC.

FOXSports.com reported that the Orioles are interested in Florida Marlins' second baseman Dan Uggla. Uggla would move to third base to take the place of Melvin Mora. Dave Trembley often said during the season that he would like a right-handed power hitter for the middle of the order. Uggla would fit that as he has averaged 30 homeruns and 90 RBIs during his career. The downside to Uggla is that he strikes out a lot and hits for a low average, but I am not too concerned about that. Uggla has proven he can hit for power and that is what the Orioles lineup desperately needs heading into the 2010 season.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, the Orioles and the San Francisco Giants have shown the strongest interest in Florida Marlins' second baseman Dan Uggla. (Source)Uggla, 29, has averaged 30 homeruns and 90 RBIs in four major-league seasons. The Orioles would move Uggla to third base to replace free agent Melvin Mora. However, with the Orioles awaiting the arrival of third base prospect Josh Bell, Uggla would only be a stop gap with the potential to fill in at first base and DH long term. (Dan Uggla's Stats)

Way Back Wednesday
Happy Way Back Wednesday! I was pleased to hear that Adam Jones won his first Gold Glove yesterday, but it made me think, is he even the best outfielder on the team? That is not a knock against him, but more of how Nick Markakis does not get the credit he deserves. Hopefully this announcement will make some people realize that there are quality players on the Orioles and brighter days are ahead. The emergence of rookie Nolan Reimold, along with the breakout season from Jones, and the steady contributions from the veteran of the group, Markakis, forms one of the top outfields in the major leagues. After his second full season in the major leagues, Jones can say he has won a Gold Glove and has been named to the All-Star team.

After reading that 22 teams since 2000 have made the playoffs after starting the season 4-4 in the Baltimore Sun, I feel a little better. Monday on The Rob Long Show
The Ravens have put themselves in a hole that I don't think they will be able to get out of. The Ravens' defense has aged over night and the problems that plagued Baltimore during the 3-game losing streak were on display again Sunday. If I can take one positive from the game, it would be that Lardarius Webb proved that he should be the starting cornerback for the rest of the season. He played with the physicality that the other corners have not the entire year, and the more opportunities he gets, the more he will continue to make an impact. My only worry is that he will wear down towards the end of the season. Webb is an important piece on special teams and is now an important piece on defense, but for a rookie, he is playing a lot, and being relied on a ton.

Chicken Box Friday
Happy Chicken Box Friday! Be sure to join us at Jilly's in Ellicott City at 1pm for lunch as we talk sports over some great chicken. I think the Ravens' defense got their swagger back last Sunday, and some of the players even mentioned how the game against Denver went a long way in helping their confidence. This will be critical for this week against Cincinnati, as Carson Palmer and company were able to score late to help secure a Week 5 victory. This week is even more of a "must-win" than last week, because if the Ravens lose, they would essentially be 3-games behind the Bengals for first place. Sunday's game will play out almost as the last match-up between the two teams, but the Ravens will be able to make that big play on defense that will secure the victory.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Ken Zampese: The Benglas quarterback coach previews Sunday's game and gives his thoughts on the success of Cincinnati this season.
Karl Benson: The WAC commissioner describes the trouble that Boise State is having in trying to schedule high-profile college football programs.
Jon Gallo: The CoachesAid.com editor previews the big games in high school football, and weighs in on college football and the Ravens.
John Carchedi: The NESN analyst breaks down the NFL, college football, and the World Series.

Way Back Wednesday
Happy Way Back Wednesday! The Maryland Terps basketball team finally had a chance to play against another team last night, even though it was against a Division II opponent in an exhibition game. However, I always look forward to the college basketball season, and with three seniors likely to start, my expectations for Maryland is higher than it has been in the last couple of seasons. Greivis Vasquez will continue to be the leader of the team, but for the Terps to become a serious contender in the ACC, Sean Mosley (14 points last night) must continue his maturation in his sophomore season, and the freshman, James Padgett and Jordan Williams, have to quickly adapt to the college style of play.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday Guest: Be sure to listen to our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be.
Steve Yanda: The Terps beat writer for the Washington Post will preview Maryland's season.
Antonio Freeman: The former Green Bay Packer wide receiver will be promoting an event he is hosting this weekend in Baltimore.

Tuesday on The Rob Long Show
I love baseball as much as anyone, but I have to agree with Rob when he says it is hard to stay interested when games are being played in November. It is a shame because this World Series has been one of the most entertaining ones in recent history. However, when the Terps are preparing to play their first exhibition game in college basketball, the Ravens are ready to begin the second half of their schedule, college football is beginning the last stretch of games, and the NBA and NHL seasons are underway, it is hard to believe that the baseball season is still going on. I do not know what Major League Baseball can do, but there is no reason why the World Series should being still going on in the month of November.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Jeff Nelson: The former Yankee and contributor of MLB.com breaks down the World Series and predicts when this series will end.
Ralph Russo: The college football writer for the AP recaps all the games played over the weekend and begins to preview the upcoming games.
Jason La Canfora: The NFL Network analyst weighs in on the latest headlines in the NFL.
Sean Welsh: Our sports insider gives his thoughts on the Ravens, the World Series, and the NFL.

Monday on The Rob Long Show
The Ravens quieted their critics yesterday with a dominant performance over the Denver Broncos. Their playoff chances would have taken a major hit with a loss, but now they will be heading to Cincinnati to play for a share of first place in the AFC North. I think the offense needs to be more effective earlier in the game, but it is hard to criticize when they continue to score 30 points and Joe Flacco throws five incomplete passes the entire game. The defense played at a speed that fans are accustomed to watching, and what had been lacking during the 3-game losing streak. Rookie Lardarius Webb continues to show that the more chances he gets, the more impact in the game he will have, and Ray Rice is quickly becoming one of the better playmakers in the NFL. For one week, all is right in Ravens Land.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Mike Duffy: The BaltimoreRavens.com writer will give his thoughts on yesterday's game.
Tony Lombardi: The Ravens24x7.com creator breaks down the Ravens victory.

Chicken Box Friday on The Rob Long
Happy Chicken Box Friday! Another great pitching performance was on display last night in New York. However, Pedro Martinez was outdueled in his return to the Bronx by A.J. Burnett as the Yankees tied the series at one with the Philadelphia Phillies. Both teams have the reputation of scoring runs in bunches, but it has been the starting pitching that has stolen the spotlight in the World Series. The series heads to Philadelphia as Game 3 is slated to be played Sunday night.
The Ravens will finally return to the field on Sunday trying to put their 3-game losing streak behind them. Everyone will give their prediction during the show, but I can not see a team who proclaimed themselves as a Super Bowl contender before the season started, to lose 4-games in a row and two straight at home. I think the secondary will be a problem all season long, but for one week, they will correct their mistakes, and the offense will continue to fire on all cylinders. The Ravens finally will get back on the winning end as they head down the home stretch and try to reach the playoffs.
Here is the rundown of today's guests:
Jon Gallo: The CoachesAid.com writer will preview all the local high school football games this weekend, and give his thoughts on the Ravens and college football.
Ross Tucker: The former offensive lineman and from SI.com and GoBigRecruiting.com gives his thoughts on Week 8 in the NFL.
John Carchedi: The NESN analyst goes around the world of sports.
Dave Curtis: College football writer for Sporting News breaks down all the big weekend games.

O's Decline Mora's 2010 Option
In an expected move, the Baltimore Orioles announced that they have declined to exercise Melvin Mora's 2010 option. Mora appeared in 1,256 games and posted a .280 batting average in his 10 seasons with the O's. Mora also hit 1 58 home runs and drove in 662 runs. Baltimore also declined catcher Chad Moeller's 2010 option and outrighted outfielder Jeff Fiorentino, pitchers Chris Lambert and Jim Miller and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez to Triple-A Norfolk after each cleared waivers. Pitcher Sean Henn, who appeared in 6 games with the Orioles in 2009, was claimed off wiavers by the Toronto Blue Jays. In related news, the Orioles announced that they have hired Jeff Datz to be their bench coach, replacing Dave Jauss. Datz spent the last eight seasons with the Cleveland Indians, including four seasons as the bench coach.

Thursday on The Rob Long Show
Cliff Lee dominated the New York Yankees last night in Game 1 of the World Series as the Philadelphia Phillies won 6-1. Lee made Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez look foolish all night as they combined to strike out five times. Good pitching shuts down good hitting more times than not, and even though the Orioles need a middle of the order hitter, this postseason has proved that teams with good starting pitching, will end up on the winning end. A top of the rotation pitcher has to be high on the Orioles offseason wish list. I agree that this was one of the best pitching performances in World Series history, but we should wait until the end of the Series to label it the greatest. Remember, this was only the first game.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Greg Gumbel: The CBS broadcaster will break down the Ravens-Broncos game as he will be covering the game this Sunday.
David Steele: The former Baltimore Sun writer and from AOL Fanhouse talks all things sports as he does every Thursday.
Kristen Berset: The FOX 45 sports anchor will discuss college football, the Ravens, and the World Series.
Pete Fiutak: The CollegeFootballNews.com writer previews this weekends games.
Lincoln Kennedy: The former offensive lineman and current analyst for Fox Sports Radio talks the latest headlines in the NFL.

Way Back Wednesday on The Rob Long Show
Happy Way Back Wednesday! Just like the players are preparing for their game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, it is time for the fans to start focusing on the Broncos as well. Over the last two weeks, we have talked about why the Ravens have lost three in a row, but now we need to talk about how to defeat the Broncos and get back on the winning track. The months of November and December is when playoff teams separate themselves from the average teams, and the Ravens over the course of their history, have taken pride in playing well down the stretch. The road to the playoffs does not get easier for Baltimore, but John Harbaugh and company will be prepared, and it all begins with the showdown Sunday against the undefeated Broncos.
Here is a rundown of today's guests:
Way Back Wednesday Guest: Be sure to tune in to hear our Pizza John's Trivia Question to find out who our guest will be.

Solomon Wilcots: The analyst for CBS and the NFL Network will break down the latest headlines in the NFL.
